Pickaway WORKS: Connecting Businesses with Emerging Talent

Partner with local students to meet workforce needs while building the next generation of skilled employees

If your business is facing part-time staffing challenges, there’s a local solution that also helps build your future workforce!
Work-based learning connects Pickaway County employers with high school students who are ready to gain real-world experience. The State of Ohio defines work-based learning as “sustained interactions with industry or community professionals in real workplace settings.” This model gives businesses access to motivated young talent while developing the next generation of workers.
Students, starting as early as 9th grade, work toward an encouraged 250 hours of hands-on experience aligned with their career interests. Earning graduation credit along the way, they can support local business operations as paid or unpaid interns, with flexible scheduling during or outside school hours as outlined by state guidelines.
For employers, this is more than just extra help, it’s a chance to:
  • Fill part-time or seasonal workforce gaps
  • Train and evaluate potential future employees
  • Build a reliable local talent pipeline
At the end of the placement, employers can decide whether to continue employment or part ways; making this a low-risk way to identify strong candidates.
In many cases, businesses may also benefit from exemptions to certain minor labor laws when students are enrolled in career technical programs.
Pickaway WORKS is your direct partner in making this process simple and successful. Their team will help connect you with students, set expectations, and guide you through employer responsibilities for placements beginning this fall.
